Serbia is the second biggest producer of raspberries in Europe. (Only Poland is bigger.) And it is not quantity over quality: Serbian raspberries (malina) are to die for!
The most delicious ones in BGD are found fresh in the green markets (pijaca’s) around the city.
Belgrade green markets
For us it is the Bajloni pijaca in Dorcol, as we happen to live only 5 min walk apart.
You could also drop by Zeleni venac just next to the airport bus #72 stop in the center.
Many Belgradians vote for Kalenic pijaca to be the best one. It’s also the most expensive one, but yet has one of the widest selections of other groceries too.
These mentioned are open air markets, but the newest one, Palilula market is an inside market in a beautiful modern building finished just couple of years ago.
Serbian raspberries and beyond
I’m not much after berries, but I’ve always been a big fan of raspberries.
When I was a child my grandpa was cultivating them in my native Finland in his own garden (only for our family to consume). I haven’t found any as delicious as his were, until I tried the ones I bought here in Belgrade.
If you visit Serbia in the early summer, you should really taste them out.
But it is not only about the Serbian raspberries, but all the seasonal berries, fruits and veggies.
Locally produced in small farms, sold by farmers in green markets of Belgrade.
My second pick would be apricots (kajsija), also an early summer product.
But then… there will be plums (sljiva), apples (jabuka), figs (smokva), lemon (limun), potatoes (krompir), beetroot (cvekla), cabbage (kupus), various herbs (biljka) and nuts (orah)… the list is never ending.
And when the season is over, you’ll find these products jarred, homemade.
Dried figs, sauerkraut… plus other products as meat, cheese, fish, bread… you already got an idea!
